New Airport in Liberia is Finally Open
Posted January 27, 2012
“After months of delays, it was officially announced that the opening has been rescheduled for next Thursday, this coming from the Transport minister himself, Francisco Jimenez in a recent press conference. The state of the art facility has had its opening delayed several times, resulting in fines payable to the Civil Aviation Authority. The developer who has been given the opportunity to remodel the old Liberia airport terminal was required to pay almost 1/2 million dollars as a result of the delays.
The new airport will have the capacity to process approximately 1500 passengers during its peak times. The airport has implemented new security measures to include security cameras, temporary holding rooms for detained passengers and a separation of the arrival and departure of passengers, something that is common place in most airports today but was lacking in Costa Rica facilities.
The official opening of the airport comes at the perfect time with high season in full swing and the highest number of tourists scheduled to come through the terminal during this time. The airport is expected to see an increase in the number of passengers passing through the terminal given past increasing number. In a peak month, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute indicated that over 31,000 people passed through the Liberia airport in 2011, an increase in approximately 28 % over 2010.
The new terminal will also create permanent jobs for the residents of Liberia, including positions in the concession section of the terminal. Liberia was one of the hardest hit regions of the recent economic changes and the Guanacaste region will benefit from the new terminal’s opening. It’s time to plan your vacation to Costa Rica and you can start it by flying into the almost officially open airport, Daniel Oduber International Airport!” by Costa Rica Close Up

New terminal building at Liberia Intl Airport and more access to our Resort
Posted October 6, 2011
Passengers arriving at Liberia International Airport will walk on carpets with sandy colors, they will see a projection of a sunset on the beach, and they will find some logs, such as the ones the waves of the Pacific push to the shore. That is, what international passengers will see and feel of Guanacaste through their five senses upon arrival. The new building will serve 1,500 passengers simultaneously, instead of the 900 people who can currently receive.
In addition, three new airlines (JetBlue, Sun Country and Air Berlin) this year will provide service to that airport, from New York-JFK, Minneapolis and Dusseldorf respectively. With them, the number will rise from 12 to 14 the total of companies come to Liberia airport. "We are negotiating with two other airlines to fly to Liberia International Airport in 2012. Also, a Panamanian company ponders this possibility of flights to LIR "added the manager
At the moment Liberia Airport is serviced by scheduled carriers like American Airlines, Continental-United, DELTA, US Airways, Frontier, Air Canada, TACA Airlines, charter airlines like Thomson Airlines (from London), Air Transat and the two Costa Rican domestic carriers SANSA Regional and Nature Air.
